Getting a faster Second Life: 10 tips to get some smoother machinima

For many machinima works, the perceived quality of the job is often influenced by the quality the movie has been shot in terms of smoothness of movements and choppy camera movements. While this is not always the case, this gude is aimed to help new directors to achieve some better quality shots, aiming at optimizing what their viewer can provide in terms of rendered frames per second, or FPS.
(A hint to check the improvements you get at any modification you make: hit CTRL-SHIFT-1 to get a window reporting your current framerate, plus some other useful information)

1) Be sure to have your Global Illumination (GI) turned off
Being a commonly used function in 3D rendering, it's been implemented in SL viewers, but with lesser results. In many viewers, this option is turned on automatically the first time you run them, if it thinks your computer is powerful enough to hold it, or when you set your graphics to ultra. I've never noticed noticeable improvements in image quality when enabling it, and experiencing it as the most resource eating effect I've found. So while its a nice thing to experiment while shooting still pictures, I'd definitely discourage its use while filming.

2) Tune your draw distance
This is a feature nice to keep in mind when filming. This parameter determines the maximum distance a prim or avatar has to be far from you to be drawn and seen in your viewer. Set in a correct way, it helps greatly in reducing the number of details your viewer has to render and hence, its speed in rendering each frame.
It turns really useful when shooting in interiors... Suppose you're in a 20 meters wide room, and you're not interested in filming its outside, because mostly hidden by walls: reducing your draw distance to 20 will not affect in any way the details you'll film inside the room, while saving your viewer from rendering irrelevant details placed outside of it. It's a great way to help you in filming in outdoors too, especially when filming in urban sims cluttered by buildings and details outside of your view!

3) Reduce your window size
Suppose you're going to encode a film to be seen in dvd resolution (720p) or lesser... filming while having your window set exactly at the resolution you need will save your fraps from unnecessary work. This will lead it to a lower size for your footage and a lot less work for your editing software when working and encoding it! In case you're pointing to reduce the jagged edges that may form around sharp edges, you may resort to increasing antialiasing to 2x or more: This will be always less demanding than shooting at double or more the size you need and then shrinking the size to the detail you need :)

4) Turn off Antialiasing
This is a common effect when shooting still pictures, helping to reduce jagged edges that form around shapes. Its effect on framerate depends greatly on the graphic card you're using, the most recent ones being able to render it without any noticeable slowdown, while older one suffering much more, due to outdated techniques.

5) Reduce shadow quality
While not every director uses shadows, keep in mind that this effect can drain a lot of resources. What can cause you a lot of loss in framerate is a shadow quality set too high. If not required by the particular shot youre making, usually a quality value of 1 or less will suffice. Increasing this parameter over the value of 2 will cause a noticeable loss in performance.

6) Increase F number
When using Depth of Field effect, take care at the value you set the F-Number parameter. As stated by SL Wiki "This is a simulated f-stop as you'd see on a camera with and adjustable aperture... In general, a smaller f-number will result in a narrower depth of field.". The effect on performance is inverse to this value, the smaller value the greater the impact on your graphice performance. After experimenting a few values, I found that a value bigger than 100 helps a lot in keeping a good framerate.

6) RendervolumeLODFactor
This is a debug setting, tuneable when having your "Advanced" menu enabled (trough ctrl-alt-D) selecting it in "Show Debug Settings" window. its purpose is to enhance the detail your viewer uses to render prims and sculpts. It can account to up an improvement of a factor of two in your framerate. When shooting scenes including far details you can keep it as low you can, even below its default value of 1, while you'll need it to be set high in closeup scenes, to avoid blocky attachments and badly rendered sculpts and meshes. You'll have to try out yourself which value suits better your scene, of course a lower value will give you smoother shots.

7) Reduce texture memory
This is a trick I've found myself testing for different values. I think its effectivenes must be evaluated basing on the memory your graphic card has on board... A value set higher than that did really slow down my framerate, while a lower level showed a significant improvement. The drawback in using a low value is that some textures might appear blurry, especially when shooting scenes full of details, which can happen easily when filming outdoors. In some movies, I easily masked this downside by using depth of field and a bit of fog effect in windlight settings.

8) Smoothing your cam movements

Not leading to any improvement in fps in itself, this technique will allow you to achieve better visuals, by allowing you to achieve smoother camera movements. Not all the viewers allow you to directly modify the parameters controlling your cam, forcing you to modify them manually as debug settings:

To do this, show your advanced settings menu (CTRL-ALT-D to show it)
Go to Advanced - Show Debug settings. I provided the values I’m currently using, feel free to test different values to match your tastes.
ZoomTime = 2.5 (Time of transition between different camera modes (in seconds)
CameraPositionSmoothing = 8.6 (Smooths camera position over time)
DynamicCameraStrength= 16 (Amount camera lags behind avatar motion (0=none, 30=avatar velocity)

9) Restrict your viewing angle
When using wide screen formats, your cam will comprise a fair amount of details, which can be unwanted sometimes, and can be cut off, saving some resources for a smoother rendering. The setting to change the angle your cam uses is located in Preferences-Move & View.

10) Tune your Fraps framerate
This is a final optimization you'll better make last, basing it of the best framerate you can get, given your computer capabilities and the particular scene you're shooting. Usually Fraps is set to record 30 frames per second, causing your framerate to drop due to the intense resource drain needed by the program to save a massive quantity of information to your harddrive. But if your viewer renders your scenes at, say, 15 fps it means that fraps records twice every frame, using twice as resources than necessary. By lowering down Fraps recording rate to 15 or less you'll be able to reduce the impact usually this program has on your shooting efficiency.

How to make SL machinima - quick filming guide

This guide is provided as a tool to allow every user to start producing their own machinima, with the least effort and as quickly as possible.

It comprises ways to get around some of the most common pitfalls an inexperienced user might fall into, and the best hints to achieve a quality clip with the least effort. The basic steps are explained, providing valuable sources where needed, happy filming!

1) Install Fraps

To start recording your footage, you'll need a screen capture software, which will save in a movie format (avi, mpg) all you can see in your viewer window. The trial version of Fraps is still usable. Being considered the best one around for windows, it deserves at least a try. Recording is usually triggered by a hotkey, that will create a new file in a predefined folder. For Fraps the start/stop recording key is F9.

2) Recording your SL content

Once you figure out how to record the content of your viewer window using your screen capture software (we'll name it Fraps from now on), you'll need to make it work with Second Life. Since SL adds some interface elements to the rendered image, you'll need to hide these elements.To hide your huds and interface, every viewer provides two key combinations:

ALT-SHIFT-H: Hide huds - press again to show
CTRL-ALT-F1: Hide interface - (Note: some people might find this combination hard to get. Keep in mind that laptops usually need a further key (usually Fn) to get the F1 function. when pressed alone in SL viewers, F1 key opens the Help Browser, so this might be a good way to test it alone. On many desktops the CTRL and ALT keys are duplicated on both sides of the keyboard, but the viewer might need you to press the one on the right or left side, so if it doesn't seem to work, try using both ALT keys.

Since you'll need to use them both combinations every time you record some footage, before starting your recordings, and again at the end, to make your interface come up again, a good practice when you begin could be to take a note.

Before using Fraps, take note of the location it saves your footage, and change it if needed. Start and stop your recordings hitting F9 key.

Note that Fraps will save your videos using the resolution of your current viewer window size, so to make an optimal use of your computer resources, you might want to reduce the size of your viewer window.

To do it, you first need to show "advanced" menu on the menu bar of your viewer, hitting CTRL-ALT-D. Once "advanced" menu appears, select "Set window size..." and choose a suitable resolution for your films. A smaller window will get you a better frame rate (fps) and produce a smaller video file when recorded.

3) Moving your cam around

When recording, your cam controls will be hidden, so you'll have to resort to keyboard and mouse to move your cam around.

The best way to do that is left-clicking on a subject while holding ALT key pressed, and moving your mouse while holding down your left mouse button. This combination will allow you to zoom and rotate around your subject. To get two other kinds of controlling your cam, try pressing CTRL-ALT or CTRL-ALT-SHIFT instead of just ALT.

4) (optional) Compressing your footage

Once you’ll have your filming done, the destination directory of Fraps will have collected a certain quantity of files, usually very large in size. This is due mainly to the fact that live recording cannot get a real good compression rate, having the requirement to do all the job in real time while your viewer is still running at full speed.

At this point, you might want to reduce the files size, to make them more manageable, to store them easily or to make them more compatible with editing programs ( I found that mac editors hardly manage AVI files).

A good tool to convert your FRAPS files in MP4, quickly and without any noticeable loss is FFMPEG. This handy tutorial will provide you with some hints and useful tools to do all the job:

The compression rates achieved by FFMPG range from ten to twenty times smaller files, and doing it very quickly!

5) Editing your footage

To edit your footage, you’ll need a dedicated application, and a lot of products are available to date.

Its choice is very personal, and depends on some factors, like if you’re on a MAC or PC, how much you can afford to spend for a commercial product or resort to a free one, and your personal tastes. A couple of Wikipedia articles can help you in this choice, providing a comparation list comprising a long list of available products:

Selecting your scenes
Adding transition effects between your scenes
Adding titles

5.1) Adding a soundtrack

To spice up your film, you will want to add a soundtrack. Usually this is done as the first step before you start editing your movie, to allow you to synchronize the scene transitions with the music, or just to adjust the length of your movie with the clip duration.
To avoid concerns related to the intellectual property of the music you’re using, you might want to use some Creative Commons licensed music, that usually allow it to be used freely in your videos. A very comprehensive list of sites providing these kind of tunes is listed at the Creative Commons site:

To comply with the music license, take care to give credits in your titles to the author who made it!

5.2) Adding sound effects

Background sounds effects will further add realism to your video clip. Wind blowing sound, squeaky opening doors or footsteps will help you creating the right atmosphere! Here’s a couple of sites providing sounds effects for free:

You can use effects included in films you downloaded too, Downloadhelper is a free Firefox plugin that allows you to extract movies provided by streaming sites and save them to your computer.

6) Encoding and Uploading

At the end of your editing work, you’ll have to save your clip as a viewable file. The file format you’ll choose will depend mostly by the site you’ll have to upload your movie to. Since most free sites accept files within a certain size, the formats that achieve the best compression rate are MP4 and WMV, which are accepted as a standard by most sites.

In my experience, every site has some sort of “preferred” format, which matches the format the site uses internally to store files.

When a different format is provided, the site usually re-encodes the clip, which means it converts it to its own format. You’ll notice this by the time the site takes to show your movie after the upload has ended. Usually when such a conversion is done, you’ll notice a loss in image quality.

Making some tests, I noticed that naughtymachinima.com accepts WMV files without reconverting it and keeping the original quality. Of course other sites might have different “tastes” so the best way is to encode your film in at least a couple of formats and see which gets the better results.

To make it, I resorted to all the new shadows effects the new viewers offer, the interior scenes were shot using depth of field and projected textures, to display in every scene multiple sources of light, casting shadows to increase the overall realism and depth of every single shot. While the light coming from the outside through the windows has a higher temperature, showing more natural tones, the light sources from lamps simulates the light coming from a flame, with a more orange colour.

Together they cast shadows that mix on bet sheets in different colours. This is the first example of shadows used in interiors, and required a set built on purpose.
